DISCOVERING THE CANOVIAN GYPSOTHEQUE

The Canovian Gypsotheque is located in Possagno (province of Treviso), the birthplace of the great neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova (1757‑1822).
The museum was created thanks to the will of the artist’s brother, Bishop Giovanni Battista Sartori Canova, who gathered in Possagno the plaster models, terracottas, sketches, and preparatory works that Canova had made in his studios.
The plaster models (at the root of the word “gypsotheque” = “collection of plasters”) show the artist’s creative process, from sketch to marble work.

WHAT MAKES THE VISIT UNIQUE

  • The main building was constructed between 1831‑1836 based on a design by architect Francesco Lazzari to house the models already present in Rome.

  • In 1957, an extension was built, designed by Carlo Scarpa, which enhanced the works with a modern layout and specially designed lighting.

  • Among the exhibited works stand out the original models of masterpieces such as “The Three Graces,” “Cupid and Psyche,” and the “Dancers.”

  • Next to the Gypsotheque, you can also visit Canova’s Birthplace, with paintings, drawings, tools, and historical rooms related to his life.
