BASSANO DEL GRAPPA

Just 10 minutes from our B&B lies the beautiful town of Bassano del Grappa, overlooking the Brenta River and framed by the greenery of the Monte Grappa massif. With its historic alleys, lively squares, and the iconic wooden covered bridge a symbol of the town the center invites a romantic stroll or an aperitif at sunset. Art and history enthusiasts can visit the Civic Museum or explore the Ezzelini Castle, while lovers of craftsmanship can discover the ancient local ceramic traditions. Don’t miss the culinary highlight: the town is home to one of Veneto’s most renowned grappas, offering a unique experience of flavor and local heritage.
Main attractions:
Ponte degli Alpini (or Ponte Vecchio)
An Old Bridge as Old as the Town
The first traces of a wooden bridge connecting the two banks of the Brenta River in Bassano date back to 1209, when a chronicle already mentioned “the bridge of Bassano.”
This connection was crucial not only for the daily life of the town but also for commercial traffic between the Vicenza area and the Marca Trevigiana. Over the centuries, the bridge was repeatedly destroyed by floods and rebuilt. A flood of the Brenta in 1567 swept away the previous structure.
In 1569, architect Andrea Palladio was commissioned to design a new version of the bridge. He initially proposed a stone structure inspired by Roman bridges, but the townspeople insisted on keeping a wooden design, which was more flexible and in line with local tradition.
Thus was born the covered wooden bridge we admire today, with sturdy piers, a wooden roof, and a design that blends aesthetics and functionality.
The bridge’s history has been tumultuous: in addition to floods, it suffered damage during wars. During World War II, it was destroyed in 1945 during the retreat of Nazi troops.
It was rebuilt thanks to the commitment of the community, particularly the National Alpini Association, which also gave it the name “Ponte degli Alpini” in honor of the units that, during World War I, crossed Bassano to reach the Plateau of the Seven Municipalities.
In 2019, the bridge was officially recognized as a national monument.
Today, the Ponte degli Alpini is not just a physical crossing over the river but a symbol of the town — of its history, resilience, and beauty.
2. Historic Center & the Brenta River
The town center is well preserved, with historic buildings, charming alleys, squares such as Piazza Libertà and Piazza Garibaldi, and views of the Brenta River that create a lively yet relaxed atmosphere.
One of Bassano del Grappa’s gems is Palazzo Sturm, an elegant 18th-century residence overlooking the Brenta. Inside, visitors can admire works of art, stories of prints and ceramics, while outside, the building offers one of the most beautiful panoramas of the town. It’s an excellent stop for a cultural stroll near the center. Recommended time for the visit: about 1 hour, including the main floor, viewpoint, and museums.
3. Art, Museums & History
In Bassano del Grappa, culture lovers will find several unmissable stops. The Civic Museum, one of the oldest in Veneto, houses masterpieces by Jacopo Bassano and precious drawings by Antonio Canova, offering a journey through Venetian art and local history.
For those wishing to explore a more “tasty” tradition, the Poli Grappa Museum, located near the Ponte degli Alpini, tells the story of distillation through historical tools, documents, and tasting experiences.
Finally, the Capuchin Museum provides a more intimate and focused visit, displaying sacred objects and 17th-century pharmacy jars — perfect for visitors seeking an authentic and alternative cultural experience.
All these sites are easily reachable on foot, making them ideal destinations for a day immersed in art, tradition, and local flavors.
Villa Ca’ Erizzo Luca: home to the Hemingway Museum and exhibits on the Great War.
5. Traditions: Grappa, Ceramics & Handicrafts
A “sweet” stop not to be missed is a visit to the town’s famous grappa tradition in the surrounding area.
Additionally, Bassano has a long-standing tradition of ceramics and handicrafts, perfect for picking up a unique souvenir or memento.
